Digital Solution Lifecycle Model

Table of Contents

Why We’re Building This

Most organizations building digital solutions either invent their own process for taking an idea from design to production, or inherit one that grew organically and no longer fits. The result is inconsistency: some solutions get rigorous security review, others get none; some get a clear operational plan, others ship straight to production without one.

The consequences are visible across technology organizations:

  • Inconsistent Classification where solutions aren’t assessed for risk, criticality, or data sensitivity before decisions get made about them
  • Security as an Afterthought where security measures get bolted on late instead of designed in from the start
  • Ad Hoc Development Practices where each team invents its own process for moving from design to production
  • Operational Surprises where solutions reach production without a clear plan for how they’ll be run, monitored, and maintained
  • Inconsistent Rigor where the level of process applied to a solution depends on who built it rather than what it actually needs

We believe digital solutions deserve an opinionated, consistent model for how they move through design, development, and operation—one that scales the right amount of rigor to the risk and criticality of the solution, rather than treating every solution the same.

How We’re Solving It

At Alpha Phase Studio, we are developing an opinionated model built around three lifecycle stages, tied together by consistent classification and security practices:

1. Design

We believe every digital solution should be classified before its design is finalized, so the right level of rigor gets applied from the start. This requires:

  • Classification criteria that determine how much process, security review, and operational rigor a solution needs
  • Reference architectures and design patterns for common solution types
  • Decision records that capture the reasoning behind key design choices

2. Develop

We believe development practices should scale to a solution’s classification, not be applied uniformly to everything. This means:

  • Development practices and quality gates scaled to the solution’s risk and criticality
  • Security measures built into the development process itself, not added afterward
  • Consistent patterns for testing, review, and release appropriate to each classification tier

3. Operate

We believe operational readiness should be defined before a solution reaches production, not discovered after. This requires:

  • Operational readiness requirements tied to a solution’s classification
  • Monitoring, incident response, and maintenance practices scaled accordingly
  • Clear ownership and lifecycle management from launch through retirement

What We’re Building

Our digital solution lifecycle venture delivers value through two complementary offerings:

Open Source Lifecycle Model

We’re developing a comprehensive, freely available model that technology organizations can adopt and adapt:

  • Classification Framework - Criteria and tiers for assessing solution risk, criticality, and data sensitivity
  • Process Playbooks - Concrete design, development, and operational processes scaled to each classification tier
  • Security Baseline - Security measures and controls mapped to each stage of the lifecycle and classification tier

Strategic Implementation Services

These implementation services aren’t part of the open-source model itself, but they have natural synergies with it—for technology organizations that want hands-on help applying the model to their specific context:

  • Solution Classification Workshops - Working sessions to classify your existing or planned digital solutions, delivered through my IT Solution Design service
  • Process Adoption Support - Hands-on help adapting the model’s processes to your technology stack and constraints, delivered through my Training & Team Enablement service
  • Security Gap Assessment - Evaluating current solutions against the model’s security baseline, delivered through my IT Solution Design Technical Reviews
  • Implementation Coaching - Ongoing support as teams adopt the model into their day-to-day work, delivered through my Training & Team Enablement embedded coaching
