Reading the Model Is Not Running It

The RST Model describes how retail systematic trading should be done. Reading it is not the same as running it — a discretionary trader can understand the argument for discipline and still keep making decisions in the moment, because nobody is checking whether a rule actually holds before it trades real money.

This is not a team capability problem — in retail systematic trading, one person already holds every role. It is a habit and process problem: turning a description of how the operation should work into the specific, evidence-tested rules, risk bounds, and records that make it actually work that way for you.

What It Addresses

The retail context has no risk desk, no separate execution team, no research function to catch a rule before it trades. Without someone checking the process from outside, the discipline quietly collapses back into discretion — automation wrapped around habits that were never examined.

Coaching is working through your specific rules, your specific risk bounds, and your specific record-keeping against the model, on your actual trading, not a hypothetical one.

Learning the Model

Before the model can be applied, you need to understand it — what gets decided in advance versus in the moment, what evidence a rule has to survive before it trades real money, how risk is bounded, and what gets recorded so the operation can be improved on evidence rather than recollection — grounded in the strategies you are actually trading rather than taught in the abstract.

Applying It to Your Operation

Rule design and evidence bar — working through a specific trading idea until it is a rule stated precisely enough to test, with the evidence bar it has to clear before it trades real money.

Risk bounds made explicit — defining position sizing, drawdown limits, and correlation exposure as rules you check against, not judgment calls made under pressure.

Record-keeping that survives you — establishing what gets logged and how, so the operation can be improved on evidence rather than reconstructed from memory after the fact.
